One
sure fire way to reduce your water use is by installing
low-water-use fixtures.
High efficiency toilets. Replacing an old model toilet with a new low-consumption toilet could automatically and permanently cut your home water consumption by 25% or more. Older toilets are the single biggest water user in your home. Flushing accounts for about 38%, more than a third, of the water used within your home each day.
High Efficiency Clothes Washing Machines. On average, a typical household will save 5,100 gallons of water (approximately $13 in water savings), between $80-100 in electricity, and $54 in detergent costs on a yearly basis. In addition, you’ll know you’re doing the environment a favor by saving water and reducing wastewater flows.
Low-Flow Shower Heads and Faucet Aerators. Installing a low-flow shower head reduces the flow of water by 50%. Energy use and costs may also drop by as much as 50%, because it requires less energy to heat less water. A low-flow faucet aerator combines air with water as it comes out of the tap. An aerator can cut water consumption by 50%.
Many local water agencies offer rebate programs and free water saving devices to help their customers reduce water use. Check the chart below to see what types of rebates or devices your water agency offers.
